Understanding the Out-Of-Pocket Costs of Health Insurance

Ever wonder why your medical bill was higher than expected? Health insurance is expensive, so it is important to know what is covered by your health insurance plan. Out-of-pocket (OOP) expenses are expenses for services that you are responsible to pay on your own that are not covered by your health plan.

Depending how your health plan is set up, certain health care expenses count towards an OOP annual maximum. These expenses include deductibles, coinsurance, copays, prescription drugs, supplemental health insurance or other services in the plans contract. Taking your deductible, for example, some plans are set up where the costs that you pay out of your own pocket will go towards your deductible. The same goes for coinsurance. Your health plan will share costs with you once your deductible is met.

There are health expenses that do not count towards your OOP maximum because they are not covered by your plan. These costs include, but are not limited to, your premium, alternative medicine, cosmetic treatments and vitamins. You also must keep in mind the OOP works differently for an individual or family coverage. It is recommended to review your health plan for expenses covered, especially if you are having a procedure of a higher cost.

Health plans can be confusing. If you have questions about how your plan works, reach out to your health insurance broker for assistance so you don’t have unexpected financial surprises.

Hazardous Wastes – What to do.

There are some items we throw away and don’t realize there is a better way to dispose of them. Did you know that most of them just have to be separated for your weekly curbside pickup? Or they need to be dropped at a special pick up center in your community.

I think most people would gladly participate in a recycle program if they knew how easy it was to do it. Share this with your friends and family or on Social Media. Knowledge is Power!

It is as easy as 1-2-3. Just place them in a clear, sealable plastic bag on the top of your recycle cart.

  • Batteries: place clear sealable bag on top of recycle cart
  • Cell phones: place clear sealable bag on top of recycle cart
  • Compact Fluorescent Lightbulbs: It is illegal to put bulbs in the trash.  Put them in a plastic bag next to cart.
  • Motor oil and filters: Call your Garbage Service for a free disposal container. Then set is next to your recycle cart during your weekly service.
  • E-Waste: Such as – printers, ear buds, TVs, computers, tablets. Get rid of these at your designated Reuse Day or call for an e-waste pickup.
  • Household wastes – paint thinner gasoline containers, aerosol cans, pool chlorine and propane tanks. Take these to the Household Hazardous Waste Collection facility in your area.
  • Medications – expired or unused:  Use clear sealable bag.  Keep liquids in their original containers.  Drop them at the Pharmaceutical collection bins in your area.

Who is Eligible?

If you own a small business with 25 or fewer employees. The annual payroll has to average less than $50,000 ( not counting the owner). If you meet those two criteria then you would be eligible for up to a 50% of any premiums you paid for the employees’ medical coverage:

For example:

Employees  10 full-time-equivalent employees 
Wages  $250,000 total, or an average of $25,000 per employee 
Employee Health Insurance Cost paid by Employer  $70,000 
Tax Credit (Year 1)  $35,000 (50%) 
Tax Credit (Year 2)  $35,000 (50%) 
Tax Credit (Year 3)  Not eligible for tax credit 

 

Big Incentive

This is a great incentive for a small business to offer medical benefits to their employees. The credit can be given for two tax years. If you can’t use it all up in one year you can push it forward as well. Not only is this a financial plus, offering benefits it a smart thing to do. Studies have shown Benefits are something employees or future employee value. A study done by Glassdoor found employees would rather have benefits than a higher base salary. If small business owners want to recruit top talent or want to retain their best employees than having a rich benefits package would clearly be a differentiator.
